CALL FOR PAPERS

The CIERRE DE MINAS Congress is a high-level technical forum designed to share key knowledge on the sustainable closure of mining operations. In this second edition, the Congress will feature case studies, technological innovations, and regulatory frameworks through keynote lectures, technical presentations, and panel discussions. Participating as a speaker or exhibitor provides a unique opportunity to actively contribute to the advancement of best practices and to position yourself as a reference in the regional mining industry.

TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED

1

Integrated mine closure vision, planned from design and focused on a positive legacy: circular, social, environmental and responsible

  • Value creation for a positive, fair and equitable legacy: connection with ecosystems, community resilience and future land use.

  • Communication strategy: expectation management, opportunity creation, proactive trust-building and long-term agreements.

  • Key challenges in the transition to integrated mine closure: successful case studies.

2

Regulatory challenges, financial assurances and international standards for a successful mine closure

  • Changes to Peru’s mine closure regulations: new requirements for closure plans, periodic reporting and issuance of the closure certificate.

  • Financial assurances: amounts, funding mechanisms, duration and release.

  • New obligations related to compliance validation by regulatory authorities.

  • Global standards and their potential incorporation into mine closure plans.

3

Technological, sustainable and circular innovations applicable to the transition to closure

  • Circular economy approaches for the valorization of waste (tailings and waste rock).

  • Innovation in the reuse of materials and closed facility areas.

  • Emerging technologies in bioremediation, phytoremediation and innovative land covers oriented toward future land use.

  • Reduction of environmental footprint through cross-cutting technologies applied to operations, closure and post-closure.

4

Organization and governance of mine closure within the business life cycle

  • Corporate, financial and social governance: decision-making mechanisms, ESG risk management and accountability to investors, communities and the State.

  • Systemic organization: planning, prioritization and reconfiguration of areas and work teams during the transition to closure and post-closure.

5

Post-closure challenges and considerations

  • Effectiveness of post-closure monitoring and maintenance (physical, geochemical and hydrological), using verifiable indicators (KPIs).

  • Efficient, safe, sustainable and responsible post-closure water management, including tailings storage facilities (TSFs), long-term O&M and treatment of passive discharges.

  • Challenges and complexities associated with obtaining the final closure certificate.
